Commissions

Commissioning a piece of custom bespoke furniture is a unique and exciting opportunity to create something completely tailored to you, the client. Shape, size, species, colour, everything and anything is an option.

Often the process begins with an initial email or phone inquiry, and after some back and forth we can pin down some details. A visit to the eventual home of the piece is always helpful and informative for me to better visualize how the project will fit into the overall scheme. I would be happy to accommodate site visits in the Toronto area. If this is not possible for whatever reason, photos of the space and of other furniture in the room and your home in general will help me to get a feel for your design taste.

Throughout the build process clients are always welcome to drop by the shop to inspect and admire the project.

Project Stages

After the initial inquiry and all the details have been sorted, I will produce dimensioned CAD drawings and photo-realistic renders for you to review (Click here for an example PDF (17Mb)). Once the designs and budget have been approved the main deposit (40-60% depending on the project) will be due, with the final balance due on project completion and delivery.

What I need from you

When inquiring about custom furniture, these are some guidelines that will help me better understand your wishes:

  • Function - What is it? Dining table, sideboard, bed? Does it have drawers, doors, specific storage needs, etc?

  • Aesthetic - What style are you after? Crisp and modern, mid-century, shaker, arts & crafts, Danish, Japanese, etc? Does it need to match something existing?

  • Size / Scale - Dimensions? Does it have any size requirements or restrictions? i.e. must seat 6 people, fit in a defined space, minimum shelf height, etc.

  • Wood Species - Walnut, ash, oak, cherry, maple, exotics, etc. I am happy to show samples and provide insight if you are stuck on this one.

  • Budget - What are you looking to spend on the piece? Please be thoughtful and reasonable here. Custom furniture of the quality I produce is an investment and is not cheap.

  • Delivery - Are there any delivery restrictions that may inform the design of the piece? Narrow doors, tight corners, low ceilings, stairs, etc?

What you get from me

What you will receive from me, is a PDF full of photo-realistic renders and specific details on materials and hardware along with a quoted price. (Click here to see an example PDF document (17MB) sent to a previous client showing the quality and detail of imagery you will receive before the build process begins). There is no limit to the amount of tweaks or redesigns that may be necessary to ensure a result that you are happy with. Hopefully this shows you how certain you can be of the final result before pulling the trigger on a final piece.

Below are examples of renders presented to a client and the corresponding photos of the finished pieces from similar angles.
